Gemstone Information

Gemstones come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes and can create some of the most beautiful and unique pieces of jewelry.  It has been said for many years that Gemstones can be symbols of a variety of feelings and emotions and that they can even work as a healer.  *Please read disclosure statement at the bottom of the page* 

Listed below are many of the gemstones I use and their believed meanings:

Agate:  There are many forms of agate.  It is believed to bring protection and promote healing.  Increases courage, self-confidence and energy.  In ancient times agate was highly valued as a talisman, protecting its owner from fever and insomnia, bringing strength and victory in battle.  Agates have long been thought to cure everything from thirst, the evil-eye, bites of scorpions, insomnia, bad dreams, intestinal troubles, skin diseases, and increase fertility (green varieties of agate).

Amazonite:  It's name comes from the Amazon River.  Said to bestow truth, honor and integrity to the wearer.  Also believed to enhance love, break unlucky streaks, enhance winning at games of chance, soothe emotions and aggravated situations. Helps clarify and improve thinking.     

Amber Protection from negativity, healing and attractiveness and energy.                                  

Amethyst:  Relieves depression, promotes calm and serenity.  Helps with addiction and stress.  Increases vivid  dreams.                                                           

Aquamarine:  Calms and clarifies emotions.  Improves sight and sharpens the mind.
 
Azurite:  Relieves arthritis and joint pain.             

Bloodstone:   Healing, especially related to blood.  Increases courage and charitability.   Also ancient believers claim this stone was formed when Jesus was on the cross and shed his blood for our sins.  They believe this rock was symbolic of this.                               

Carnelian:  Part of the quartz family, bright orange to a reddish orange, and can be translucent to clear.  Giving confidence and said to help with blood disorders and eliminating toxins.  Makes you feel comfortable in your environment and allows you to feel settled and secure.

Chalcedony:  Chalcedony gets it's name from the Greek City, Chalcedon.  Blue Chalcedony is most commonly thought to give physical strength, beauty and endurance to the wearer.  As a protector, it is said to ward off negative energies.  It is also thought to provide protection during political upset and while traveling.  Believed to assist in Gall Bladder problems, depression, bad dreams and improve lactation.  Pink Chalcedony is a true opal in a beautiful pastel pink with a translucent appearance.  Gemstone of love and rising in cost very quickly, this stone is a wonderful investment.  Believed to calm relationships and promote inner healing.  Also improve skin conditions. 

Citrine:  French word for "Lemon".  Aids in digestion and mental functions.  Increases self-esteem.  Heals the body and assists with communication between people.  It's warm energy promotes optimism and attracts abundance.                                                 

Coral:  Wards off bad thoughts from others and promotes general well being.  Gives wisdom, prevents madness and assists in correcting anemia by slowing the blood flow.                                                 

Flourite:  Comes in a wide range of colors from blue, purple, pink, black, yellow, colorless and reddish orange.  Means "To Flow" in Latin, bringing calm to a troubled mind, perceptiveness and peace.  It is said that holding a piece in your hand brings a sense of inner peace.  Brings out artistic abilities allowing you to earn money from your talent.  Prevents fear of failure.

Garnet:  Birthstone for January.  Balances your natural energy.  Highly protective stone.  Garnet comes in many colors from deep red, pink to brownish red.  If receiving a Garnet as a gift, it is considered good luck, however, if ever stolen, bad luck to the thief.  In the middle ages, it was used to ward off harm and increase chivalry, loyalty and honesty.  Garnets have been used back to prehistoric times.  It is believed that Garnets illuminate at night and ward off any evil.  Removes nightmares and depression.  It has been said that Noah used a Garnet Lantern to steer his Ark through the darkness. 
Garnet is really a family of stones: Pyrope (generally the blood red variety), Almandine (Orangey-red to Brown), Andradite (Brown, Black and sometimes Yellowish-green to Yellowish orange), Grossular (Clear, Orange, Pink, Yellow, Green, Brown), Spessartine (Yellowish Orange), and Uvarovites (Deep Emerald Green), Tsavorites (Green to Yellowish Green), Rhodolite (Purplish red to red), Hessonite (Yellow orange to red).

Goldstone:  Reduces tension and stomach problems. 

Hematite:  Calms and soothes, reducing stress and blood pressure.  Believed to assist in blood flow and heal disease of the blood.  Magnetic hematite is used to promote healing with rheumatoid arthritis and joint pain.                                                                 

Howlite:   Reduces stress and anxiety.  Quietly soothes and calms to bring gentleness and patience.                    

Jade:   Protective and lucky when worn as jewelry.  wisdom, mercy, humility, generosity, peace, and harmony.                                                                   

Jasper:  There are many kinds of Jasper.  The overall effect is believed to calm a troubled mind, help with illness and digestive problems.                                                      

Red Jasper: Promotes grace and perseverance.  Helps with conflict and aggression.                                  

Lapis:   Truth and Friendship.  Allows you to feel confident in stating your opinions.  Emotional healing and stability.

Leopard Skin Jasper:   Aids in finding and achieving your life's goals.                                                                                    
 
Malachite:   Often called the "Business Man's Stone" bringing prosperity to the wearer.  Strong stone which helps release negative emotions and protects from attack.  It has a copper content that assists in rheumatism.  It is thought to change the energies in your life, attract love and wealth.  It is easily broken down in some solvents so use care when cleaning.                         

Moonstone:   Draws love and helps in interpersonal relationships.  Changes with the rotation of the moon's cycle.  Stronger with the full moon.  Believed to be formed from the moon because it glows at night.  Also known to protect against dropsy, urinary problems, fevers and fluid retention.                                         

Obsidian:  Comes from the rapid cooling of lava.  Used to be used for cutting tools and weapons as it is very sharp when cracked or broken.  Known to be a nurturing stone to assist in accepting the changes around you.  Helps in releasing negative energies, relieve digestion, clear the mind and improve vision.  If used in healing, it is recommended to use another stone such as Smokey quartz or of a lighter nature.  Mahogany Obsidianis believed to be one of the greatest protectors due to it's high iron content.  It is also said to induce visions and dreams which reveal to us our own part in the difficult areas of our lives.

Onyx:   Releases old relationships and keeps away general negativity.  Improves concentration.  Protective stone.  Helps to balance your emotions and the mind.  Not recommended to wear while sleeping as it provokes nightmares.

Peridot:   Mined at night because it is easier to see with lanterns, this stone is found in meteors that fall to the Earth and from the rocks of a volcano.  Protects entire body and it is believed to relieve anger, fear, anxiety as well as stimulates the mind, assists with insomnia and digestive problems.  Supposedly stronger when set in Gold.                 

Peruvian Opal:  Thought to stimulate creativity, stimulate hair loss, relieve stress and give courage to speak your mind, blue Peruvian opal is vibrant and translucent with a jelly-like appearance.  High in price and one of the most wanted of stones as it is becoming a very rare to find good quality.  Considered a valuable investment.  Must be protected from sun exposure as it will fade in bright sun as water in trapped in the crystal structure.  Also recommended to prevent chemical exposure.   

Quartz:   There are many types of quartz but the most common are:  Rose Quartz - Meaning unconditional love and heals emotional wounds, Lavender and Blue-Violet - Calms the mind,Clear & Aquamarine - Healing, Red, orange and yellow - Produce energy.
The greatest of all healing stones. 

Rhodonite:  It was used extensively to decorate the Russian Court, as it was very popular in the 18th century.  Consists of a beautiful pink color with black manganese veins.  It has a very distinct appearance and very attractive.  Similar to malachite in energies, believed to stabilize emotions, bring order and harmony to your life.

Snowflake Obsidian: Protects against nightmares and emotional draining.

Sodalite:  Appears blue with a white calcite.  Helps rationalize and calm the mind.  Great for those who are confused.  Helps you to have self expression and do things differently and uncommon to what you are accustomed to.  It is believed that a piece placed under your pillow while sleeping will prevent nightmares.

Sunstone:  Rare and difficult to find, Sunstone is a naturally occurring, flashing orange-red semi-precious gemstone.  This stone has lots of sparkle and flash.  Sunstone is believed to strengthen the life force, bring luck, instill optimism and increase strength and vitality.  Helpful to the liver and kidneys. Aids digestion. Reduces acid. Cartilage problems and rheumatism. 

Tanzanite:  Expensive, rare and highly sought, Tanzanite originates from one location, Tanzania.  Colors are light lavender to violet blue and very beautiful.  Discovered in 1967, it is still considered to be a relatively new gemstone.  It is believed that Tanzanite should be worn on the right side of the body.  Powerful in bring peace and agape.  Helpful for workaholics.

Tiger's Eye:   Rich golden yellow to dark brown and polished to a high gloss.  Small banding's reflect the light to bring a luminous appearance.  Protection against hypochondria or those worried about catching illnesses.  Believed to heal wounds, eyes, pain in the lower legs and feet.                                                      

Topaz:  Generally a translucent yellow, golden, green, light brown, light blue or clear.  Believed to cure depression, increase self-love and improve chances of success in endeavors.

Turquoise:   Unique stone as it was used by the Indians to indicate illness by the color it turned when its worn.  Believed to fade when danger or illness is near or to advise of a unfaithful lover.  Known to protect against pollution and strengthen the body.  Also believed to bring good luck to the wearer.  Untreated Turquoise will eventually turn green from body oils.  It is recommended to clean with warm, sudsy water and dry immediately.  Genuine Turquoise is very expensive, so today most of what you obtain is reconstituted (crushed or crafted from chips, combined with other stones and re-formed).

Unakite:  Famous for finding the root cause of illness, Unakite consists of pink feldspar mottled on green epidote.  It finds the illness by th e gentle release of long term energy blocks and leads to an emotionally calm state of being.  Stimulates reproduction, helps in the healthy development of an unborn baby.  Also known to neutralize the effects of electromagnetic radiation.
